LAW DAY

Posted: 2009-04-27

FRIDAY - MAY 1, 2009:

In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day, celebrated on May 1, as a day of national dedication to the principles of government under law, to underscore how law and the legal process have contributed to the freedoms that all Americans share, and to provide an opportunity to recognize the role of courts in our democracy.

Each year the American Bar Association establishes a theme for Law Day, and this year we are commemorating the bicentennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, our country’s 16th President, and his legacy of liberty. While he occupied the Oval Office, President Lincoln focused on justice and equality for all citizens, and his presidential legacy lives on in historical events such as the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery, and the Civil Rights and women’s suffrage movements.

Mr. Lincoln will visit the courthouse this Friday, May 1, in the morning. Don’t be surprised if he stops in your office just to chat. He will answer any questions you have and, if you’d like a photo taken with him, don’t forget your camera!

A naturalization ceremony will be conducted inside the Old Courthouse at 10:00 a.m.; the Hon. Walter H. Rice will preside. The ceremony lasts approximately one hour and more than 20 people will become new United States citizens. The Common Pleas Court Awards Ceremony (all Divisions, including Dayton Municipal Court and the Dayton Bar Association) will start at noon. The General Division will recognize three local attorneys and one firm for their work in our Appointed Counsel, Mediation, and S.T.A.R.T. programs. Please come down to the Square so that you can extend your congratulations to our Award recipients who have dedicated their time and services to the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court General Division.

Thank you.
