Posted: 2006-03-07
The Montgomery County Common Pleas Court is sponsoring an essay contest for all high school students in the Miami Valley as part of its 2006 Law Day activities. The essay is limited to one thousand words and will be judged by Common Pleas Court Presiding Judge John W. Kessler, U.S. District Court Judge Thomas M. Rose and Lori Shaw of the University of Dayton School of Law on content, effort and analysis as well as use of correct English grammar. In addition to publication on the court’s website, the essay will be read by the winner as part of the Court’s Law Day celebration on May 1 at Courthouse Square. The top three essays will be recognized with first place receiving $250, second $100 and third $50.

All essays must be based on the following theme:

Justice Louis Brandeis once stated: “The doctrine of the separation of powers was adopted by the Convention of 1787, not to promote efficiency but to preclude the exercise of arbitrary powers.” How does the principle of separation of powers protect our individual freedoms?

1. All essays should be one thousand words in length or less and must be typed.
2. Entries must include the author’s full name (first and last), address and phone number or the entry is not valid.
