Judicial Assistant - Judge Steven K. Dankof
The Honorable Steven K. Dankof is seeking a Judicial Assistant. Salary: $17.32 per hour ($36,025.60 annually)

Provides a variety of administrative responsibilities on behalf of his/her Appointing Judge.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Reasonable accommodations will be made for disabled persons, covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, in accordance with its requirements.

1. Operates courtroom audio/video equipment for trials and other courtroom proceedings requiring an official record; maintains information relating to the jury selection process and docket procedures, provides word processing and secretarial services on an as-needed basis.

2. Replays excerpts of recorded proceedings as requested by the Appointing Judge, Magistrate, and/or Attorney during the course of a proceeding. Copies portions of proceedings onto new electronic medium for replay during closing arguments or others points of a proceeding.

3. Creates, selects, utilizes, types, and maintains video log printout documenting pertinent information and events that occur during course of proceeding in the courtroom.

4. Sets up, positions, and operates other visual equipment including video deposition, overhead projectors, ELMO projector, slide projector, audio cassette machine, and easel.

5. Responsible for after-Docket scanning of all Docket reports and Appointing Judges notes into OnBase.

6. Gathers all documents and video records of all proceedings when a written transcript is requested; uploads such information to the AVTranz website for processing; disburses transcript to the attorneys and files with the Clerk of Courts.

7. Cross-trains as a Bailiff and provides Bailiff coverage as needed.

8. Types Empaneling Entry and final jury count upon conclusion of voir dire and at time the final jury panel is selected.

9. Accounts for, labels, and logs into computer, maintains control over, and manually records and transfers all exhibits and evidence introduced at trial or any court proceeding. Types jury charge, verdict forms, and interrogatories. Makes copies, gathers exhibits and evidence to be presented to jury for deliberation. Maintains evidence security by following security procedures and maintaining chain of custody.

10. Inputs cases into Trakman. Prepares entries to submit to property room and transports evidence for storage. Creates, maintains, and updates filing system for hard-copy documents.

11. Creates and generates documents by use of CourtView, transcription, and free-form instructions.

12. Other duties as assigned.

13. All Essential Duties and Responsibilities in this Position Description will be performed exclusively by the Judicial Staff.


This position has no supervisory duties.

Works at the pleasure of the Appointing Judge.

Works in an unclassified and exempt position. Does not qualify for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and is not eligible for Family Medical Leave.

Audio/video system and control panel, microphones, cameras, computer; printer, hearing impaired apparatus, dictation equipment, deposition machine, slide projector, overhead projector, ELMO machine, copier, fax, calculator, and other general office equipment.

Judges, attorneys, prosecutors, public defenders, jurors, Supreme Court, State Offices, Federal and other Courts, Sheriffs Office, maintenance staff, litigants, witnesses, general public, other court staff.

Good office working conditions. Frequent exposure to evidence including graphic photographs of crime scenes and victims, occasional exposure to smells, burnt items, bloody and soiled clothes, body fluids, flammable items, needles, and other disagreeable elements when handling evidence. Exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Exposure to machinery noise and odors when disposing of evidence.

The following physical demands are typically exhibited by position incumbents performing this jobs essential duties and responsibilities. These physical demands are not, and should not, be construed to be job qualification standards, but are illustrated to help the employer, employee and/or applicant identify tasks where reasonable accommodations may need to be made when an otherwise qualified person is unable to perform the jobs essential duties because of an ADA disability.
Occasionally must lift heavy items, up to about 50 pounds. The employee frequently sits for periods of time and occasionally stands, walks, and lifts items of varying weights. Employee converses verbally with others in person and by telephone. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when using a computer screen and ability to focus and see when operating video equipment. Regularly exhibits digital dexterity when operating video equipment and when working on the computer.

An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification: High School Degree, GED or equivalent with over one year of experience in maintaining records or documentation; legal secretary and/or paralegal studies. Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.

Knowledge of: General Office practices and procedures, English word usage, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation.
Ability to: Follow instructions and processes; maintain effective working relationships with associates and job contacts; maintain confidentiality of sensitive subject matter; be trained to operate equipment associated with courtroom recording system; organize, package, and store items in retrievable order;
Skill in: Use of video and audio system; oral and written communication; production typing; word processing; operation of computer; application of job software programs.

Employment Eligibility Information:

Vacation Leave:
Vacation leave may be granted to full-time employees upon completion of one year of service with the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, General Division. Twenty-six (26) bi-weekly pay periods in active status shall constitute one year of service.

Sick Leave:
All Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, General Division, employees are entitled to Paid Personal Leave/Long Term Sick Leave credit.

Holidays: Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, General Division, employees enjoy paid holidays.

Health Benefits/Medical Coverage:
All employees of the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, General Division, except part-time employees working 20 hours per week or less, employees hired for a temporary appointment, an interim appointment, or employees hired as substitutes, shall receive health benefits.

Life Insurance:
All benefit eligible employees of the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, General Division, receive a $50,000 basic life insurance policy paid by Montgomery County. Supplemental life insurance is available for purchase.

Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, General Division, employees participate in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (O.P.E.R.S.). Employees contribute 10% of their salary; the Court contributes 14%.
